At the mention of the Mediterranean, what comes to mind? Postcard-worthy images of gorgeous
blue ocean waters, sandy beaches, clear blue
skies…and food? Yes, food! Layden Chiropractic shares nutrition tips,
and the Mediterranean diet is bantered around the world of
nutrition for its multiple health advantages
as well it should in our chiropractic world, too. Fish, fruits, and veggies are
good for all of us in this Plainville
chiropractic family!
BENEFITS OF MEDITERRANEAN DIET
With the expanding recognition that diet plays
a beneficial role in health and prevention of disease issues
like osteoporosis, bone loss, etc., guidelines are being created.
A new paper with suggestions for guidelines endorsed
a mediterranean-type diet with daily consumption of 2 to 3 dairy products to deliver
calcium and protein adequate enough to preserve
normal calcium-phosphorous balance and bone metabolism all of which are related
to a decreased risk of fracture. (1) In other papers,
the Mediterranean diet has been said to reduce hip fracture
risk. Another recent paper explains that there is indication
that a modified or alternative Mediterranean diet like the DASH (“Dietary
Approaches to Stop Hypertension”) diet may also decrease hip
fracture risk in addition to threat of lumbar spine
osteoporosis in women. (2) A study just released this
past month showed that older adults who followed
the Meditterranean Diet more strictly had reduced chances
of developing cognitive decline. (3) Better BMD, reduced
osteoporosis odds, decreased probability of
cognitive decline and hip fracture may be motivating to try and follow the Mediterranean diet, yes? Layden Chiropractic finds these new
studies interesting enough to share with our
Plainville chiropractic patients and their families.
WHAT DO I EAT ON THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET?
Good stuff! Fruits,
vegetables, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats (olive oil, nuts, seeds), yogurt,
seafood/fish, a little red wine, and lots of water, un-sugared sparkling water,
juices. It proposes staying away from sugars,
refined grains, ultra-processed foods, etc. (4) These are all possible if not simple!
