Nutrition and fall risk. What’s the link? It’s pretty simple when you think about it. Poor nutrition sparks muscle and
weight loss. Layden Chiropractic thoroughly assesses our
older Plainville chiropractic patients at risk for falls, especially their nutritional status. Layden Chiropractic cares about fall prevention!
NUTRITIONAL STATUS BEFORE FALLS
Researchers tried to describe
the association between nutritional status and body mass
index (BMI) and fall risk and recurrent fall risk in older adults
who reside in community settings. They discovered that
malnourished patients and those at risk for malnourishment maintained
a 45% higher risk of experiencing at least one fall. (1)
Confirming BMI and nutritional status is pretty
easy to perform. Layden Chiropractic does it to safeguard
our Plainville chiropractic patients!
Plainville FALL RISK AND MALNUTRITION
Fall risk assessments have often disregarded
nutritional status instead focusing on issues like balance
and fall risk-increasing drugs.
Nutritional status is influential,
too. Malnutrition prompts weight loss which leads to
muscle weakness which leads to an increase in fall risk. It’s truly
a ripple effect! A new study documented
that malnutrition was significantly linked with high fall risk
according to a few leading fall risk assessment
tools (especially the Johns Hopkins fall risk assessment
tool). (2) Preventing falls is optimal. Recovering from falls is important.
NUTRITIONAL STATUS AND RECOVERY AFTER FALLS
Low nutritional status in older adults notably
in those who have a history of falling puts them at risk of poorer recovery from a fall.
Nearly a third of community-dwelling adults with a fall history were either already malnourished or at risk of
malnourishment. Enhancing the nutritional status of those who have fallen increased their physical
performance. (3) Layden Chiropractic understands nutrition and is ready
to help our at-risk patients enrich theirs!
