morning routine with “bad” knees, the stiffness and pain that is
part of getting up and moving. Layden Chiropractic hears our Plainville
chiropractic patients describe this all the time. Those Plainville
knee pain sufferers would appreciate getting some relief. What’s one way to get some relief?
The Mediterranean diet that involves, of all things, eating. Layden Chiropractic
wonders “How bad can eating be for Plainville knee
pain relief?”
Plainville OSTEOARTHRITIS SUFFERERS AND THEIR PAIN
Plainville knee osteoarthritis is widespread.
There are many Plainville knee pain sufferers. They
are not alone! 240 million people around the globe endure osteoarthritis. That affects about 10%
of men and 18% of women. (1) Any Plainville knee osteoarthritis sufferer
can describe the knee pain, the morning stiffness,
and the creaky joint motion that lessens the quality of daily life. (1) It’s just not very
fun. Now a Mediterranean diet could be
some fun though!
WHAT TO EAT ON A MEDITERRANEAN DIET
The Mediterranean diet incorporates lots
of fruits and vegetable, legumes and nuts, cereals and seeds, seafood and fish.
The Mediterranean diet permits moderate intake
of dairy, poultry and eggs as well as red wine
and olive oil as the central source of dietary lipids. (1)
Yum! Consuming a Mediterranean diet can be quite tasty
and exciting for a recent
Mediterranean diet enthusiast.
BENEFITS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET
Knee osteoarthritis involves inflammation in
addition to pain. A review of 3 studies highlights that biomarkers of inflammation and
cartilage degradation due to osteoarthritis fell
in the Mediterranean diet group. (1) Particularly, the pro-inflammatory
cytokine IL-1α decreased in the Mediterranean diet group. (2) Knee osteoarthritis
patients who better followed a Mediterranean diet have
lowered risk of deteriorating knee pain
at 4 years follow up. For those who didn’t experience
knee osteoarthritis at the start of the 4 years study
and followed a Mediterranean diet, a 9% reduced risk of getting
knee osteoarthritis was found. (3) Overall, a higher faithfulness
to a Mediterranean diet is affiliated with better
quality of life and less pain, disability and depressive
symptoms. (4)
